Being a small business is an advantage! Are you using it?
I’ve been rethinking the presentation Brian Clark and Sonia Simone from Copyblogger Media gave on Content Marketing World 2012 and came up with the list of best small business marketing tips.
Here are the great 17 content marketing tips that will work for your business:
#1 Create a publishing (editorial) calendar.
You want to have it organized and coming out on schedule from the very start!
#2 Carefully target the terms that matter to your readers.
It’s about traffic and it’s about what people want to hear. So, do some research first with tools like Google Keyword Tool.
#3 Go to a passionate audience. If it is small – good. It’ll make it even more passionate.
You need feedback, you want your content to appeal to reader’s minds and hearts. It’s more difficult to achieve when your target audience is broad. Find a passionate group and talk to them!
#4 Create your own philosophy that differentiates you from others.
Unique. Authentic. Stand out! Have your own story!
#5 Understand who is your customer and who is not.
Do not haunt just everybody passing by. If they are not your intended customers – let them pass by. Do not adjust your product and your content to everybody.
#6 All channels must lead to your website
All conversations going online about your brand, communities you run, they all must lead to your website. You are selling there and you want your customers to come back there – to your website.
#7 Set your own rules for the publication (editorial) calendar.
Less than 5 times a week? Might work for you! Publication frequency is often a balance between quality and number of posts coming out.
#8 Watch out for consistency when you invite guest bloggers.
Edit content to meet your standard. Have a consistent voice in your blog.
#9 Curate content!
The formula can be – 20% – your content, 80% – guest content. Sharing makes everybody feel good. So, just do it – share!
#10 Create content for different audiences.
Some content can be intended for customers who pay money and some – for influencers who are passionately engaged. You need both audiences.
#11 Listen to your readers.
Listen and hear your readers, adjust based on what you learn. Give them the type of content and the type of product they are asking.
#12 Hear that frustration and come up with the plan on how to fix it.
People might not always know how to fix their problem, but they will let you know when it hurts. It’s your job to come up with the solution.
#13 Repurpose your content as you learn.
Have content that attracts a lot of readers and is engaging? Compile top articles and come up with an E-book or a newsletter.

#14 Work on your headlines.
It’s all about headlines! They must be specific and keyword rich. It’s the first thing people see in search results and it’s about whether you’ll actually make it into the search results! So, spend time working on them.
#15 Enjoy being small and likable!
Being small is an advantage. Be authentic and tell your personal story the audience wants to hear.
